Forgot How Hard Yoga Can Be

So today I wandered into my yoga class all confident and such, but then, quickly realized that this teacher likes "flow yoga". For me, this form of yoga is super hard as it requires much more strength in your arms and mid-section. As you all know, the only thing I'm good at is cardio - so this class was a huge challenge for me. But I did it, came out sweating and panting like a dawg (especially after doing about 20 sun salutations and holding downward dog for about 2 minutes each time!) - but I did it. 2 Yoga classes down, 3 more to go to meet my monthly goal!

These yoga classes are a friendly reminder of how much I HATE strength training. I absolutely LOATHE it. I have no idea why - cardio is just as mundane as strength training - if not more mundane - ??? But seriously, I do need to keep up with this strength training activity, and I think Yoga is just the class to do it.

Today was a good eating day - I had a rather big bowl of turkey chili for dinner tonight - but I had a small lunch and blueberries for a snack. All and all, this week is off to a good start! I really want to see 17_ lbs on the scale next week - so I'm really going to push myself to make that happen.

This week is also the last week of my summer intensive grad seminar. Man oh man, three weeks of 3 hour classes a day and 8 hour working days after class is tough work - not to mention I have to write a 12 page paper for next Monday and have a 45 presentation on Thursday - did I mention I hate presentations!?! All I have to do is just power through this week and then... ahhhh - the light at the end of the tunnel is getting brighter and brighter... so close....

Can you believe we are already half way through July? This summer is just zipping by me! I haven't had a moment yet to stop and smell the roses, I'm going to have to pencil "stop and smell the roses" in at the start of August in my calendar.

I'm also trying to convince my brother to run an 8K with me up in Kelowna in October - but we'll see about that - seeing as I currently can only run 2.5 miles in 40 minutes! Yikes - got to shave some time off that and improve my speed if I am to keep up with my athletic little bro.

  1. Oh gosh I hate presentations too! They're my biggest fear in life lol. Just fake it 'til you make it, practice, practice, practice, and that's all you can really do I guess.

Good luck! You're almost there, some downtime is just around the corner :)

  2. As my trainer is fond of saying - you hate it because it's one of your weaknesses. However, strength training is *absolutely vital* to successful fitness. The impact from cardio all the time will eventually start to wear on joints without the strength training to build up muscle and ligaments to support them. Plus, it's that strength training tat will increase your muscle mass to allow your metabolism to move faster to make that weight loss sustainable. So keep up those yoga classes and hit the free weights at least once a week too!!

  3. I actually like giving presentations :)

Strength training is awesome. I hate it. So much. But it's made a huge difference in my figure. I haven't lost a lot of weight, but I have lost more than 5 inches off my waist. I think yoga is a great way to work on flexibility and strength, but you should check out some free weights or strength training dvds!
